This meticulously researched novel catches the flavor and feeling of Denver and Colorado at the time of World War 1. The author's style combines deep research with a personal ancestral connection to many of the characters. The rich descriptions of pre-war and wartime Denver are interwoven with individual stories of class and ethnic conflict; good times and bad times; discrimination and the cultural and social mores of the time. The attention to detail and the subsequent vivid depictions quickly involve the reader in the lives and times of the characters.
This book is a worthy successor to the author's earlier novel, My Heart Lies Here, which depicted the labor strife and hardships endured by coal miners and their families in southern Colorado just prior to America's entry into WWI.
I enjoyed White Winter To Do Justice very much and look forward to the succeeding volumes of the trilogy.
I normally wouldn't have chosen to read something set during times of modern warfare, as I find myself sensitive to such topics. However, the story woven by Laurie Marr Wasmund was so well done that I found myself drawn in and easily enamored with the characters. The war was not made light of in any way but was not the largest focus of the story.
The story revolves around two siblings and their cousin. The impact of the war on their relationships with one another and those around them is very well written. Some of the sentiment expressed about the prevailing attitudes of the time and the way that it affected the people involved were maybe things I had not ever considered. The family in this story is American Irish Catholic, which was not necessarily a good thing based on overall national feelings regarding American patriotism.
